Paediatrics

1. About the Department :

        The Department of Paediatrics started as a 150 bedded unit with 20 bedded level 3 NICU and 12 bedded level 3 PICU functioning 24*7 services with dedicated Paediatricians. Catering to a population of Shivamogga and receiving patients from 7 surrounding districts. Average daily OPD is 250, average yearly admissions in PICU is1800, average IPD yearly admissions are 9800 and in NICU is 2550. Our department is also catering skilled neonatal delivery services for department of OBG which has average of 1000 delivery per month. Department of paediatrics also has super speciality services in the field of haematology including thalassemia and haemophilia and high risk new born care services.

 

a) Bed Occupancy :

* NICU – 200%
* PICU – 80%

b) Paediatric Wards – 80- 85%

c) Work Pattern :

* 3 functioning units will have 2 OPD/admission days per week.
* Each day out of 4 staff per unit each staff will take care of NICU, PICU, Wards, OPD respectively during OPD days.
* Rest of the days all will finish their respective rounds and attend teaching programs to UG till 12 pm.
* HOD and Unit heads will supervise all above activities of their respective units.
* One Paediatrician will be on duty 24 hours each day irrespective of working day/holiday.
* Other than OPD cases all the cases will be seen in paediatric casualty which is functioning 24*7 with qualified staff.
* Sundays and holidays will be taken on rotation basis.
* Unit Heads take overall responsibility of unit.
* Other staff members take calls during their OPD days on rotation.
* Unit Heads along with other staff members do rounds daily in NICU, PICU and wards.

4. Academic activities (UG, PG teaching activities):

 

a) UG Teaching :

* 150 admissions every year.
* Theory classes.
* Clinical posting – junior and senior batch 50 students each, divided into 3 units, respective unit staff will take bedside clinical classes in rotation.
* Integrated teaching program.
* Topic is divided and given to students to perform. 2 staff members will monitor the students work.
* Interns; 1 teaching or case discussion session before completion.
* New Curriculum classes started from 2022.

 

b) PG Teaching :

* Four PG seats got sanctioned from the year 2020 -21.

 

c) Nurses Teaching.
